So it was my first day of work at the PR company that agreed to take me on as an intern. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t wake up prepared (as an intern should do on her first day.) I had all the things I needed for a productive work day in my huge leather Zara bag, which flapped against my leg erratically as I raced towards my local station, late, as usual. Somehow, despite how bloody slow the Hammersmith and City line was, I managed to arrive at 10 on the dot.
Walking into the studio and being greeted by a number of welcoming faces, I knew today would be amazing. I started off getting briefed on how the postal system worked, how to post items onto the company website, the process of photo shooting, look books, cuttings, blog searching, refunds.. The list was endless. My favourite type of work! I soon got stuck in and the hours literally flew by. It was a lot to take in, but I had lots of files and power points emailed to me on my new work email which helped loads.
I worked the whole day with my two PR managers; one in the form of a guy who’d gladly wear tweed and brouges while sitting on a train listen to songs about hoes, guns and weed. Definitely the biggest rap and hip hop fan you’ll ever meet: they’re amazing.
Most of my day was spent writing copy’s for products, preparing for them to be posted onto the website. My knowledge of fabrics, pattern pieces, ditzys and half drops definitely helped. I have to say, it proved how semi-important it is I finish the degree I’m on at the moment. To be completely honest, I was starting to feel it was a complete waste of time as I’m so sure of what I want to do as a full time job now.
I got a 45minute break of which 40minutes of it were spent waiting for a vindaloo and pilau rice at a local restaurant. I am the greediest person in the world. Most interns spend their lunchtimes starving themselves in Starbucks nibbling on carrots and a pot of homous.
I’ve been told my travel and food expenses get covered which is fabulous; I most definitely plan on being sensible though, like seriously. I ended the day packaging and sending orders out to customers and then rounding up the copy’s I had been drafting throughout the day.
Right now I’m on the train home sipping a café laté, on my way to feed George and indulge in a little retail therapy before the shopping centres all close. Very successful day, if I say so myself!
I promise you all I will make sure some pictures get taken tomorrow. Today was all about me getting to know my surroundings and figuring out what I was expected to do in the work place etc. Watch this space!
